Usability Test Report

INTRODUCTION

This usability test was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction of volunteers interacting with our digital platform designed to create workshops for elderly community members. The primary goal was to identify pain points and areas for improvement, ensuring the platform meets the needs of volunteers who plan and manage these workshops. Key concepts assessed include “Task Success” (users’ ability to complete specific tasks without errors), “Time on Task” (the time taken to complete a task), and overall user satisfaction with the interface. The findings from this usability test will guide improvements to optimize user experience and accessibility.

METHODS & PROCEDURES

Participants: The test involved 3 participants, all volunteers aged 21 and above with varying levels of technical proficiency. Participants were selected to reflect the primary users of the platform who create and manage workshops for elderly community members.

Tasks & Scenarios: Participants were given the following tasks to complete:

  1. Create a new workshop.

  2. Send invitations to participants.

  3. Provide feedback using the platform’s feedback form.

Testing Metrics:

  • Task Success: Measured as the percentage of participants who completed each task without external assistance.
  • Time on Task: Average time taken by participants to complete each task.
  • Error Rate: Number of errors or misunderstandings encountered during each task.
  • Satisfaction Ratings: Collected via post-task questionnaires using a 5-point Likert scale.

Tools and Equipment: Tests were conducted on a desktop environment with Chrome browser and a tablet to assess responsiveness. User sessions were recorded with usability testing software for analysis.

Procedures: Each participant was briefed about the test goals and provided with a consent form. They were given task scenarios and observed as they completed tasks while providing verbal feedback (think-aloud protocol). Post-test interviews were conducted to gather qualitative insights.

During Usability Testing

RESULTS

Task Success: On average, 90% of participants successfully completed all tasks. The task to create a new workshop had the highest success rate (100%), while the task to send invitations had a slightly lower success rate (80%) due to confusion regarding the 'Send Online' and 'Send Offline' buttons.

Data Collected by the questionnaire using Google Form

Time on Task: Participants completed the 'Create Workshop' task quickly, while the 'Send Invitations' task took longer due to uncertainty about button functionalities.

Error Rate: The primary errors occurred during the 'Send Invitations' task, where users were unsure which button to choose for online or offline invitations. Other tasks had minimal errors.

Satisfaction Ratings: The average satisfaction rating was 4.2/5, with participants appreciating the ease of creating workshops but highlighting the need for clearer instructions for sending invitations.

Key Insights:

  • Volunteers found the 'Create Workshop' task straightforward and intuitive.

  • The 'Send Invitations' task requires more clarity around button labeling to distinguish between online and offline options.

  • Participants were generally satisfied with the platform's overall design and functionality.

IMPROVEMENTS/ACTIONS TAKEN

Based on the findings, the following improvements were made:

Before: Confusion between 'Send Online' and 'Send Offline' buttons during the 'Send Invitations' task. After: Updated the button labels to 'Send Invitations Online' and 'Send Invitations Offline' for clarity and added a brief tooltip to explain the purpose of each option.

Before: Icons for navigation were unclear, leading to errors. After: Replaced ambiguous icons with labeled buttons and added hover text for additional context.

CONCLUSION

The usability test provided valuable insights into user behavior and areas for improvement, particularly for volunteers managing workshops for elderly participants. Implementing the changes has significantly improved navigation, accessibility, and user satisfaction. Future iterations will continue to refine these features based on user feedback and testing to ensure the platform remains inclusive and user-friendly for all target audiences.
